Volunteering
Volunteering is both rewarding and fun!
There are many ways you can volunteer with our program, from working with horses, leading & side walking during classes to administrative needs. Just ask us.
It's All About Clients
Volunteering with If Wishes Were Horses Foundation, Inc. can be an unforgettable and fulfilling experience. Whether you're looking for a long-term commitment or a short-term opportunity, we would love for you to join us in making a difference in the lives of our clients and horses. We appreciate all that our volunteers do for our organization and know that we could not do it without them.

What kind of time commitment do we ask of our volunteers?
What we typically request from volunteers is a commitment of 1-3 hours per week for a minimum of 4 weeks, preferably for the duration of the entire session. We encourage volunteers to allocate these hours to the same class each week. However, if weekly commitment isn't possible, we also welcome volunteers to serve as substitutes. As substitutes, volunteers are scheduled as needed, depending on their availability, by the volunteer coordinator.

What are the requirements to volunteer?
No prior experience working with horses or individuals with disabilities is necessary to volunteer with If Wishes Were Horses. Prior to your first volunteering session, a training session will be provided, and special training sessions for other volunteer roles are available throughout the year.

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.
A volunteer assisting in classes should be capable of walking for at least one hour without experiencing fatigue, able to jog short distances, capable of lifting his/her arm (one at a time) above shoulder height, and able to support a modest amount of weight.

For the safety of all participants, If Wishes Were Horses reserves the right to assess a volunteer's suitability for the role.

What kind of volunteer opportunities are available?
Leaders
Leaders are responsible for control of the horse during class. They warm up the horse before class, secure the horse during mounting and dismounting, and then lead the horse during class. Volunteers must receive training and be confident in leading and handling of horses before having the opportunity to become a leader.
